Misses training with illness
McTominay (illness) sat out Scotland's training session in Charlotte with a stomach bug but is expected to be available for Saturday's World Cup opener against Haiti, according to Sky Sports Scotland.
Analysis: McTominay's absence from training raised immediate concern given his status as Scotland's most important player, but the nature of the issue is understood to be minor and the coaching staff are not believed to be worried about his availability for the Group C clash in Boston. The Napoli midfielder is expected to recover in time to take his place in manager Steve Clarke's starting lineup for what is a must-win opener for the Tartan Army.
Key player for Scotland
McTominay should play a prominent role in midfield for Scotland in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Analysis: McTominay went from a part-time player at Manchester United to a key figure for both Napoli and Scotland, developing an excellent eye for goal from his midfield role and thriving when deployed in a more advanced position. McTominay was Scotland's top scorer in the qualifiers with two goals and also notched 14 goals for Napoli between the Serie A and the Champions League in 2025/26. Most of Scotland's chances of pulling an upset or two in Group C will rest on McTominay.
